Navaratri, nine days of Mother Divine
The nine days of the mother divine, or Navaratri is a special time of the year to awaken one’s connection with the Divine. The mother is the first source we all know in this birth, none of us would be here without our own mother who has given birth to us from her own body and cared for and loved us from our first breath. So at the same time the Divine Mother which has countless names and forms in Sanskrit is an essential aspect of life for us to understand for inner awakening, inner peace and inner healing.
Each day has a special quality and on each day special prayers or pujas are offered with special foods or activities. As with all Vedic traditions this festival takes place with astrological significance, the moon has entered the healing sign of Ashwini which is a sign of remarkable healing. Hence this time of the year is a wonderful time to cleanse, nourish and balance the body. On the completion of Navaratri is Vijay Dashami, the 10th lunar day and a day of great celebration. In Mysore there is a wonderful parade of elephants which has been a tradition since ancient times symbolizing “victory” for all, victory from ignorance and from disease. From the newsletter of the Indus Valley Ayurvedic Centre located in Mysore, India.
