Joan Park: I do yoga just for me.

My first class was six weeks after the birth of my third child. Having been a competitive swimmer, I always assumed yoga would be too easy for me (just a bunch of stretching exercises)! It was only when I felt completely out of shape, overweight and frazzled that I was willing to try it.

Yoga is something I do just for me. It’s 100% healthy, challenging and satisfying. I love the little milestones and the sense of accomplishment when I reach one. There’s nothing like the shared energy in a class.

Doing yoga makes me feel good, keeps me in shape and allows me to cheat age a little it…with it I feel young, fit and healthy. I also have knee issues and I believe that with yoga I can retain the flexibility and strength that I need to protect those joints.

Off the mat I am definitely more patient and open to new ideas. Yoga also helps my tennis game–good breathing, balance, flexibility and strength!
